The energetic fanfare that we were hoping to hit 2021 with has been more of a horrified whimper, entering a new year that feels remarkably less *new* and much more déjà-vu…

Here we are in the UK squirrelling ourselves away, braced to wade through the tangles, practicalities and anxieties of yet another lockdown. Hopefully this time at least, thanks to the lessons of unwanted experience, we have some sense of how this all works – for us and us alone.

I personally believe that huge New Year overhauls borne of consumerism enforce the idea that we are ‘less than’, which is extremely untrue and also extremely unhelpful, especially right now. Yet as much as I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions, I *have* sat and quietly distilled a few loose intentions in a bid to make sure I don’t end up floating in the ether and sleepwalking through the year – none of which involve dropping half a stone in seven days.

Small shifts in habits are as much as I’m willing to encourage in myself this month – short morning strolls to stop me from rolling out of bed and into my laptop, less coffee and more matcha to stop blood sugar spikes the second I decide to move, a switch from scrolling squares to reading books (ironic I know, as I post this) and a bit of structure that hopefully won’t see me working late into the night, as is often the desire of my creative brain. And most importantly, no berating myself for a perceived failure if I land somewhere in the in-between, because extracting a single creative thought in the midst of this chaos is a miracle.

For now I’m going to pop the heating on, be thankful that my WFH setup doesn’t require any panic purchases, that my insulin pump is (as ever) within reach, enjoy the vast expanse of sky which I can happily see from this chair and just do what I bloody well can.

Whether you’re running every day, running towards the biscuit tin, or flip-flopping between the two on the regular (hi), I’m with you. Do whatever it is YOU need to do today, and feel however it is YOU need to feel. Tomorrow might be different, or the same. Oh, and here’s a big 2021 hug from me if you in any way want or need it 💛
