Jen’s Happiness Ten: Sept 2015 (Or, Fowey you stole my heart)

October 29, 2015
Fowey Town

I’m cheating with this again. Forgive me but it’s probably going to save hours of your time, not to mention exasperation over what we’ll call my ‘proficiency’ at tangents. I wanted to write you a whole, unapologetic and gushing love letter about my intense feelings for Fowey after my first visit last month. But I’ll just tell you through some phone pictures of varying quality and size instead. With a few words, first, because I just can’t help myself. Our reason for descending on Fowey was a wedding (not ours), but we decided to extend the trip for a few extra days because Cornwall is a damn long way from just about everywhere, not least Southern Spain where we flew in from after a fleeting three days in the sun with Mrs Grieves, brothers Grieves and Co. It was entirely worth it, not only for the beautiful nuptials, not only for the…

VIDEO: What I Eat In A Day

June 23, 2015
Food Day In The Life

A little while ago I wrote this post about my perspective on food and how I approach the slightly tricksy relationship between food and type 1. I decided to pick up the camera and do a vlog version to show you the sorts of things I eat in a day. In between the inevitable ramblings about eggs, there are lots of tips and nuggets about flavours, cooking, your relationship with food and eating to feel gooooood. Voila. Nom. Scoff. Yum. Etc. Sorry about the singing.

What I Eat… And Why

June 9, 2015
Brunch

A little while back I did a day in the life vlog of me pootling about living my life and having a little natter about type 1 diabetes. You lovely people seemed to enjoy it, so thanks for that. In it I did a fair amount of eating. Obviously. I briefly touched on the sorts of things I eat and the relationship I personally have with food. So I thought it might be useful and/or interesting for me (hopefully not just me…) to chat a little about the principles of the kinds of foods I eat, and how my perspective on food these days is a rather healthy, balanced one. That perspective may sound pretty straightforward, but there was a point in my life where I felt completely controlled and entirely trapped by my relationship with food. If you’ve never had issues with food that probably sounds utterly ridiculous, but…

Recipe: Super Squash with Feta, Green Beans and Mint

Lunch on the hoof, even in the centre of London, often makes me entirely sad. You’re either forking out for a limp bit of lettuce, reluctantly accompanied by a sad helping of protein with an appetising grey tinge, or else paying a fiver for a soggy beige sandwich that’s going to mess with your blood sugars and make you feel entirely crap about your life choices. I love making exciting lunches when I’ve got some time the night before (read: haven’t stumbled in at 10.30 after that ‘ok, just one more’ glass of wine which triumphantly sends me crashing into the pillow having just about managed to take my shoes off). Behold this sexy array of colours and textures – there’s so much going on but it really is so simple to put together, with ingredients that you’re not going to have to pay to import from far flung corners…

Navigating Heavy Meals With Type 1 – The Ginger Pig, Brighton

March 10, 2015
The Ginger Pig Sunday Roast

Oh let’s talk about pigging out today shall we? Ok good. It’s a few months now since the Fembot became a permanent fixture on my being after ditching the injections in favour of the Omnipod pump. After getting to grips with how it all works on the most basic level, for the most part my insulin-punctuated life has carried on much the same – testing, dosing, prescriptions, hypos (although noticeably less), frustrations, elations, constant surprises on behalf of my body and its torrent of hormones that continue to defy my logic and emotional rationale. For the last month or so, now that my body is no longer wondering what on earth is going on with this new foreign object that’s attached itself, I’ve been exploring the more intricate diabetes management life on the pod offers. After 18 years on injections, I’d got to the point where we were pretty sussed; apart…

Recipe: Fauxtato Gratin

OHHHHH HAPPY DAY. Carbohydrates are a tricksy one for many peoples, not just us type 1s, as I’ve explored a little before. They’ve been hailed, demonised, ostracised, allowed back in in moderation and everything in between. Some people can cope with more than others, some can’t so much as sniff a loaf before upping a dress size. I can handle certain things – oats, quionoa, sweet potato, squash – with minimal bother, but I generally see a triple cooked chip as a bit of a weekend treat. The issue I have with simple white carbs (especially when cheese is also involved) is that to me, they’re as addictive as crack. I have a little bit, and then a bit more, and a bit more, then two days later I wake up and wonder where I went, before I pick up my fork again in search of that fluffy, warm, soft potato-based cuddle…

Recipe: Baked Egg Frittatas

January 20, 2015
Baked Egg Frittatas

Breakfast. Ohhhhh breakfast. Unequivocally, wholly and without doubt my favourite meal of the day. If you ever find yourself having accidentally filled a bathtub with guacamole, just give me a call and hand me a spoon on the way in. If I could have avocado on a drip feed, I would. The scale of my egg consumption is a running joke, but they’re just the perfect food; for a diabetic, or anyone else. I can’t remember the last day I didn’t eat an egg. Oh wait, Christmas day. I was saving room for the colossal lunch and the 4395 Ferrero Rocher that followed. Ok ok, I ‘m a fan of the egg. So yeh, breakfast. It’s the king. But it’s only the king when I make it myself (read: my actual Masterchef boyfriend does it. Seriously, LOOK at that page) or I head to one of East London’s ridiculous and glorious array…

Food Angst On Pump Therapy

November 26, 2014
Sums it up.

Oh hi. An update on Pump Life is coming, but for now one of my all time favourite subjects: food. Oooooohhhhhhhh food. The highlight of pretty much every day, three times a day. I’m OBSESSED with food – I frequently annoy myself on Instagram with my pictures. I spend far too long in supermarkets. I pack it in, quite frankly. So when Diabetes UK asked me to write this for their blogs site, I had a little think about how my relationship with food has had to change while I adjust to my new fembot life, and the following words fell out. It’s getting easier as the days go by and I grapple with carb estimates, split doses and temp basal rates, slowly but surely learning what my new bionic body can cope with. We’re in week three now – the angst is slowly subsiding and I’m getting back to my greedy ways,…

Nurture Three Day Juice Cleanse – Nourishment or Nonsense?

July 17, 2014
Ohhhh so pretty! A day's intake. Gulp.

I can already see you rolling your eyes. Juices?! As in… no food?! Well, no solids… yes. For three days. It happened, I did it, and it was amazing for my body, my mind and my blood sugars. More detail on that in a bit, but just what exactly would possess a food loving self-confessed greedy pig to give up foods for 72 hours? Well… Ever since my life-changing visit to the yoga retreat last year I have been paying a lot of attention to what I’m putting into my body in order to make it as nourished it can be so that I feel strong and healthy. Looking at food labels is nothing new in my life, but for many years previously as I battled with my weight I try anything from a zero tolerance carbs policy to drinking shakes – without any concern for the actual ingredients involved.…

Happy Pancake Day! Clean, Low GI Recipe

March 4, 2014
pancake_picbackground

Ohhhh pancakes. After discussing my deep and complicated love/not so love affair with bread in the last post, along comes pancake day. Flour, flour everywhere… We just cannot get away from the white stuff. This has all appeared just a bit too quickly while I’m still shifting the final remains of the Christmas waistline (yesIknowit’sMarch), and oh… what’s that mischievous little fella I see around the corner? Hi there, Easter. AHHHH GADDDD. No holiday is really ever a healthy holiday – which is a whole load of fun for us type 1s – but as holidays go, this one is up there among the rest as pretty big on the glutton front. I remember being a kid at school and the boys running into the playground the day after pancake day to boast about how many they’d managed to wolf down before they were forced to surrender on account of either…
