Cycling To Paris and Running a Half Marathon With Type 1 | missjengrieves

November 13, 2013
London To Paris

MOST MAMMOTH EDIT EVER. But it’s here! Nearly two months on, the challenge is a completely surreal distant dream. The finer points are all a bit hazy, but the feeling I got from that epic week will never ever leave me. What a year. So where the hell have I been all this time? Well, apart from getting very heavily reacquainted with the bottom of a wine glass – normal service and then some has resumed – I’ve also been busy moving house, getting a new job and being consistently distracted by the sudden regular appearance of a human boy. GASP. And I thought it would have time on my hands after this was over… silly, silly Jen. This video is 22 minutes, so quite an investment on your part (soz in advance for the heavy use of the nostril angle) but if you’ve any interest in diabetes, cycling, running,…

Cycling 100 Kilometres | missjengrieves

London To Paris

Yes, I know, people keep telling me and I’m not one to argue given that it’s 100% fact. I’ve changed. So I made a little video of my exploits as this absolute non-athlete goes on a casual 100km bike ride of a bank holiday Monday, in preparation for my pant-wettingly fast approaching bike ride to Paris in aid of charideeeee. Thought it might be amusing to watch me struggle (did I mention? Categorically NOT an athlete) but also vaguely interesting to see how I manage my blood sugars over such a sustained period of exercise. That fact that I couldn’t avoid the most UNFLATTERING CAMERA ANGLES EVER SEEN EVER EVER is something I’m slowly coming to terms with. Good job I’ve got no pride really. P.S… Soz to Kellogg’s, it was no personal attack on you. I’m talking about cereal bars in general. Promise. Enjoy! Please like the YouTube vid,…

I Quit! Giving Up The Booze (GASP)

August 16, 2013

I can’t do it. It’s not worth it. I’ve had enough. So I QUIT.   Alcohol. Not the challenge. I cannot get my head around how quickly The Big Challenge has come around… despite the fact I’ve been counting down the weeks/days/hours since about May. It’s exactly three weeks til I hop on my bike and try and make it to Paris. (Note: TRY). Which means it’s exactly four weeks until I TRY and run a half marathon, or 13.1 miles, or 21 kilometres. OHHHHMYYYGGGOOOODDDDD. Now, training is going (whispers) wonderfully. I am IN THE ZONE. In fact I’m more disciplined than I’ve ever been in my life about anything, ever. I barely recognise myself, and my friends are certainly a little taken aback by the athlete in training formally known as idiot Jen. Jen who wants to do everything and so completes nothing. Jen who has a distinct inability…

#Progress… Intense Training with Type 1

July 20, 2013

Sooooo… I’ve been a bit quiet recently, on here and Twitter. Normally when I say that it’s because I’ve been dashing about getting into various pickles, generally as a result of a lethal combination of general day-to-day idiocy (it’ll be charming to someone, some day…) and slightly too much vino of an evening. This time, however, is so very different. I’ve been quiet on here, I’ve been quiet on Twitter, I’ve lost my social life and abandoned my housemate to move into the gym… I’ve become a fitness FREAK. Turns out The Big Challenge – named such for an over-exaggerated self-important dramatic effect – is a lot bigger than I anticipated, and is every bit as Big as I was theatrically and ridiculously making out. After the dreamy drinky festival haze of New York (aka the Last Hurrah) was over, I knew it was time to get serious. I was…

missjengrieves Published on Hip & Healthy – Chic Cycling

Hip & Healthy

So this is exciting. YFT1 has been published on Hip & Healthy – an online magazine focussing on fitness, health and well-being. For once I’m not wanging on about Type 1 *gasp* – this article is actually about cycling, something I rarely stop talking about now that training for The Big Challenge (which is VERY much to do with Type 1) is well and truly underway – suddenly and wonderfully plunging me into a previously alien world of padded shorts and neon lycra. It describes me as a ‘savvy cyclist’ which is something of a concern… those of you that have got to know me a little bit through YFT1 and beyond will know that I’m definitely not savvy anything. Have a read of my Chic Cycling Advice for Beginners by clicking on the image below. Woohoo!

Just Quickly..., The Big Challenge

Ohhhh Nooo…

June 15, 2013

First run post-holiday. Needless to say I felt every single one of the 40,000 Reese’s Cups I definitely shouldn’t have eaten while adopting the US lifestyle for a week as I pounded the pavements of South West London. Let’s not even get started on the burgers. But the training must continue (did I mention I’d love your sponsorship?! Please??) as the days and weeks until The Big Challenge seem to be passing by at a frighteningly rapid rate. When I started thinking about running this morning it was bright sunshine. By the time I actually stepped out… This happened. I got SOAKED. That black top? It’s green. No it’s not pretty. Not pretty at all. Hellllloooo boys.

Start Spreading the News

Etc etc… I’m in NEW YORK!!!! And I’m writing. It’s 30 degrees outside and I’m writing. HIYYYAAAAA. Oh my god it’s amazing. So bloody amazing. There are obvious type 1 related obstacles that I’m navigating every day – namely the food (HUGE. And immense) and the drink (LOTS) but I’m counteracting that with battering my poor already-battered feet with a rather ridiculous amount of walking, plus kiiiiiind of (but not always) avoiding the carbs. Plus the heat. JEEEEZ it’s hot.  Hot and wonderful. The flight wasn’t as bad as I anticipated – after the battering I took en route to Australia I thought it might KO me for the afternoon while the other girls excitedly headed to the first bar, but I’d learned my lesson last time it seems, and after dodging most of the carb-heavy plane food (which managed to actually resemble food this time – thank you British Airways), doing…

The Big Challenge

May 15, 2013
Gulp.

No, like REALLY big. Really, really super silly big. Well, not landing an aircraft big. Or turning water in wine big (still trying on that one). But in the realms of my silly existence… it’s a whopper. I’m excited. And I’m utterly terrified. Here’s a very obvious clue… Quite a few months ago, long enough ago that I didn’t have to acknowledge I was making a real life commitment, I for some reason decided to sign up to run a half marathon for Diabetes UK in September. This to me is a really scary prospect, mostly because I’ve never actually been able to run. Yep. Seriously – I used to get pulled off the basketball court 10 minutes after going in, all guns blazing, and crashing and burning just as quickly. When I was a footballer (I KNOW RIGHT), I was a goalkeeper. Then I was a dancer, which suited…
