VIDEO: Type 1 Diabetes and Mental Health

June 16, 2016
type 1 diabetes and mental health

It’s Diabetes Week. Hooray? It’s great that the focus this year is clearing up misconceptions, dispelling myths and setting the record straight. Education, always. So I’ve made a little video around a topic I feel very passionately about: how living with type 1 diabetes impacts your mental health. I’ve written a long and passionate post on the subject here, and I just think there needs to be greater emphasis on the fact that this is a mental condition as much as it is a physical one. I strongly believe that if this was addressed, the numbers would improve, and we potentially wouldn’t have the highest HbA1c figures in Europe. Potentially. I’ve spoken out to hopefully open up the conversation a bit more, so if this resonates with you please do let me know. I know there’s a ton of things I’ve missed off and I’m also no expert in psychological…

VIDEO: 20 Year Diaversary, Spice Girls + Chest Waxing?!

June 2, 2016
diaversary

The videos just keep on coming don’t they? I’m having a lot of fun filming, being creative with the shooting and trying to make them look and sound lovely, rather than just simply waffling into a camera. I hope you’re enjoying them too, if not… sorry about that. This one’s worth watching on the basis that I dressed up as Posh Spice, complete with wig and catsuit. It was a lot. Aside from that, Ian heads up to Manchester and we explore the city with some nice coffee from Ezra & Gil in The Northern Quarter (good breakfast menu too in you love an egg/avocado combo as much as I do), Junkyard Golf Club which I would highly recommend as a fun way to spend an hour, and some super sushi from Umezushi, where I met a fellow type 1 with an Omnipod at the next table. Obviously. I also briefly…

VIDEO: Falling Off My Bike + Ian Cooks Up A Storm

May 23, 2016
Falling off my bike

A video of many parts, this one. Keeps it interesting right? A bike ride without any actual cycling (although plenty of shots of me looking absolutely ridiculous in Lycra), a wonderful photography exhibit at the stunning Somerset House and me looking on, dribbling slightly, while Ian cooks up an absolute corker of a Sunday dinner.

VIDEO: Falling in love with Venice

April 29, 2016
Venice

Ohhhhh, Venice, you stole our hearts. Too many beautiful shots to choose from. So I pretty much chose them all. We went, we ate, we drank, we saw, we loved. I bolused, hard. Italy, I’m coming back for you and your exquisite gluttony. Very, very soon.

VIDEO: Roaming in Rotterdam

April 13, 2016
Rotterdam Video

Rotterdam, where have you been hiding? I went to hang out with the mylife Diabetes Network – a collective of blogger wonders from across Europe who share the commonality of a defunct pancreas. I filmed the weekend, which was only slightly annoying for them… If you CBA with a video, I’ve done a little photo gallery too. But do watch the video my loves, it’s much more fun and I’ll reward you with £1,000,000 general awesomeness.

VIDEO: Post-Op Return to Civilisation

March 15, 2016
post-op return

This idiot picked up her camera again… After being housebound for four days following the (casual) lasering of a piece of my heart, I ventured back into civilisation to celebrate y’know… being alive. Cue the montages. There’s a bit of East London roaming, a gorgeous celebratory lunch at Tarberna do Mercado (highly recommended if you like to try everything on the menu) and some red wine vibes with my best friends. Oh, and a couple of stubborn blood sugars… Do let me know if you like it. A full blog post of my ‘entertaining’ heart operation will be along soon…

VIDEO: Hypos + Hiding from the Rain

February 29, 2016
Hypos + Hiding From The Rain

So apparently I reallllly like an emotional montage. Went vlogging again didn’t I? Me and my camera, roaming around that there London Town unsuccessfully trying to avoid the rain. A sudden hypo only briefly halted proceedings – there was a little visit to Broadway Market (one of my favourite places in this big bad city), and a short but super sweet meeting with Izzy for the first time. Plus some suspiciously well-behaved blood sugars, hypo aside. Just another little day in the life of this idiot type 1 diabetic; hope you enjoy!

VIDEO: Setting A Temporary Basal

February 4, 2016
Temporary Basal Omnipod

Oh hey. Got a new camera. Made a new video. For this reason: No-one told me about the temporary basal function when I signed up to That Pump Life. I also (obviously) didn’t seek out that information, so that one’s on me. But I got an almost life-changing type of surprise when I did surrender the injections and attach myself to this little unassuming piece of kit that just quietly keeps me alive every day. This video is not an instruction, because it’s in what we shall henceforth deem ‘JenSpeak’ and if you’ve been here for a while, you’ll know that JenSpeak is a non-technical, slightly laboured and mildly bemusing way of communicating. BUT if you’re not one for the Science Bit, this might just work for you.   I am very aware I chose music that really sounds like I’m in a Sonic the Hedgehog game. Which is probably a childhood dream realised. For…

That Time I Got Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes

October 12, 2015
Type 1 Diagnosis Story

Oh, to be alive. I have 100% written about my diagnosis before, so I’m basically just shoving this down your throats because, multi-platform, innit? This was more like therapy than a vlog. You’ll see. Any questions because apparently I just really love to talk rubbish about the Spice Girls instead of actually providing you with useful information, please comment! I like to know you’re out there. There’s 400,000 of us type 1s in the UK alone. You’re not alone in this, baby.
