A type 1 diabetes diagnosis doesn’t just affect the person with the condition, but their loved ones too. I had the privilege of exploring this in depth in this week’s Type 1 on 1 episode with the brilliant @luma_g and her mum @janeygeorgis.
DJ and youth worker Luma was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2019 and, speaking publicly about her condition for the first time, she openly and pragmatically discusses grieving the life she knew before her diagnosis, and how it’s made her a better person as she’s learned to accept the ridiculous realities of type 1. “I was grieving the loss of my pancreas and my life without having to think through so many decisions.” WE. HEAR. THAT.
Luma chats about the challenges she’s faced over the last 18 months and the way they’ve affected not only her, but her family and friends. Luma is wise, empathetic and resilient, and what I love is that she recognises this in herself. This is such a warm episode – it truly was so special to get a glimpse of Jane and Luma’s relationship and I can’t thank them enough. I sent it to my mum too because, well… all the feels.
I hope it resonates with you whether you live with type 1 yourself, or live with it through someone close to you.
