I’ve been hooked up to the Dexcom continuous glucose monitor for a while now, so I thought I’d chat through how it’s impacted my type 1 diabetes management and the pros and cons of life on the Dexcom G6 as opposed to regular finger prick blood glucose testing.
I chat through all sorts of things including data overwhelm, alarms, look and feel, cost, accuracy, overcorrecting, sensor insertion, feelings on being attached, sensor adhesive and a couple of other witterings. Spoiler: I love it. So much.
I’ve also made a specific sensor insertion video for the G6, which you can find here.
My Dexcom is gifted, but these opinions, as always, are my own.
I’d love to know your experiences of using the Dexcom – do let me know! Find out more about the Dexcom here.

Thanks for this Jen. Totally agree with everything you say here. I love the Dexcom G6 too for the same reasons. I think the biggest plus for me is being able to see which way my BS is heading before I drive or whilst driving. It’s all very well doing a finger prick test and seeing you are 6.2 or something but actually knowing which direction they’re heading and therefore being able to do something about it immediately if necessary is a massive bonus and SO useful.
Also, I’ve set the low alert to come on around 5.7 so that I have time to do something if it’s heading downwards BEFORE it becomes more urgent.
And, I have to say the alert alarms did drive me a little crazy initially, sounding off to tell me I was too high or too low all the time, it can become a little overwhelming and consuming, so I tend to switch of the high alerts most of the time now. I look at the readings several times a day and, for me, the lows are really the ones that I need to hear about.
Big high-five for the Dexcom G6 🙂
Great video, very human and relatable. I’ve been using Libre since it came out 5 years ago and attached a Miaomiao at the beginning of this year to convert it to a CGM and as you say, utterly transforming after 35 years as a sporty type 1. Fascinated to hear about the Dexcom which sounds a huge improvement on the cobbled together technologies I’m currently using even though when it all works, it’s still improves my life. Sadly the cost is still a bit of an inhibitor but maybe one day!
