My Go-To Items for Type 1 Travel

August 6, 2019
Lots of travel items on a table

A handy keep-yourself-sane-and-safe 101 list for travelling with type 1 diabetes:⁣⁣
1. Enough insulin pump supplies to last 2.5x the length of time you’re away. This might seem excessive but as much as I’ve cruised through on the normal three day wear, I’ve also had to change three in a DAY (surfing, I’m looking at you). This amount is a PAIN to pack and carry on the way out, but skipping through the airport with a light load on the way back is a new kind of joy.⁣
2. Back up injections. I was very blasé about carrying these or making sure I had in-date insulin until my insulin pump completely packed up for no reason. You won’t need these, until you really REALLY need these.⁣
3. @dexcom #gifted. This low-key lifesaver has completely changed how I manage my diabetes. It allows me to get on with life with no more than a glance at my phone and I simply adore you Dexy, you incredible thing. I do appreciate not everyone has access to this.
4. @vialsafeinsulinprotector #gifted. I got sent this unassuming number to try and I can’t believe I got so far with my insulin just kicking around in various purses and bags. A no-brainer to make sure those precious vials of nectar don’t smash.⁣
5. @frio.uk. Insulin is fine at room temperature for a month so I don’t stress too much about the plane and such, but travelling in heat for days on end is a different story. Fridges can be lacking when you’re backpacking, and this cheeky little number has been a saviour more than once.⁣
6. Elovate 15. There are a million different ways to fix low a blood sugar but what I love about these is that they take up ZERO space i.e. a huge win for travel. They also work mega fast which is reassuring when you’re in a random hostel at 3am and can’t breathe or see properly. #drama
7. Not diabetes related, although it could arguably help those cortisol levels – my big dose of perspective in the form of a lil polaroid picture. Being away for weeks working long hours can leave you wondering where exactly you belong. Carrying a little slice of home is a lovely anchor that I highly recommend ✌🏼
