A Christmas Blood Sugar Wish

December 24, 2020

Time to fill my insulin pump up with that precious nectar, say a little prayer to the blood sugar gods, put the correction doses on standby and hope for the best!

Life with type 1 diabetes is tricky enough, and this Christmas in particular is tricky enough; whatever you do and however you manage your diabetes, please don’t add to the stress by giving yourself a hard time if your blood sugars go absolutely wild because you got generous with the roast potatoes, or decided to sample three desserts.

Whatever the numbers say, know that you’re trying and that’s all you can ask of yourself – none of us is failing when it comes to attempting to self-manage a serious chronic illness. Ever ever ever. Indulge. Enjoy. Savour. I take comfort in the fact that I’ll still have this excellent jacket, no matter what happens to my blood sugars 🤷🏼‍♀️

And doesn’t it feel like there are some strange tangles in the air? Contradictions of being aware of just how much you have, but knowing how much is comparatively missing this year. Hopefully this Christmas is one in which there’s room for the smaller moments to make themselves known, because personally I find the collective depth of them often feels the most comforting, most grounding, most meaningful in the messy, hopeful stumbling through life. That doesn’t mean things don’t feel heartbreaking or shit, but it does remind us what to cherish – and conversely, what really doesn’t bloody matter.

In some ways I credit my type 1 diabetes for that – the never-ending decisions and constant duty, the ridiculous situations, the moments of sudden vulnerability, eternally adapting and staying ahead of unknown outcomes, the requirement for endless resilience even if you feel slightly broken by it all… the opportunity to just ‘be’ subsequently becomes a remarkable one by default.

Whether you’re going all out or tomorrow is just another day, I hope that you are safe and feel connected in some way – even if it’s not in person, and I hope you find peace somewhere in amongst it all – even if it’s just for a moment. Big, warm, squeezy hugs and an extra roast potato from me 💛

As you perhaps remember I low carb . I discovered Dr.Almond chocolate that is great. Did you know there is a low carb resto in London. Also on the Type1LCUK FB Group there are great recipes. Would love you to vlog you cooking some, please. I have a fear of cooking having done woodwork at school.
