This week’s guest is stand up comedian, writer and podcast king Ed Gamble, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 13.

Taking what he calls a ‘more than relaxed’ approach to diabetes management in his teenage years, the pursuit of better physical health a decade later led Ed to the unattainable pursuit of blood sugar perfection. We chat about finding a balance between the two approaches, managing diabetes with a demanding schedule and using stand up comedy as a way to normalise the obscurities that life with type 1 diabetes can bring.

Oh, and there’s that time he had to stop a taxiing plane to prevent his insulin from freezing in the hold…

This episode highlights the humour that can be found alongside this very serious and at times debilitating chronic condition.

Check out Ed’s latest live dates here.

Congratulations on your first podcast. Very informative and lighthearted. Guess we all have our own variations on realization of diabetes. I had to convince my GP that I was diabetic and plead to be tested for it. Upon confirmation I was put in the hospital given a vial of saline solution, a syringe and an orange and told to have a go at it. All these years later I’m still learning or relearning how to manage it. Still have difficulty with the pre-meal bolus (ie blousing for meal and then missing the meal.) Or changing the IOB calculation for correction dose so you don’t stack insulin to final get BG readings that are flat. Writing this while treating a low so please forgive the rambling, time for bed. Looking forward to more post, best to you.

HI Jen, I really enjoyed your podcast with Ed. It was a refreshing, informative and fun podcast. I am a Mum of a Type 1 teenage boy who, like Ed certainly has his own Dexcom signature! I have shared it with my son and the rest of my family as it gives a great insight into the lives of a twenty something Type 1, with some useful tips and tricks for living with the condition. I look forward to hearing more. Thank you xx

Hi Kate! This is so very overdue but thank you so much for listening! I’m glad there were bits that were helpful – I hope you and your son are coping ok in lockdown and that diabetes isn’t playing up too much – it’s certainly been an interesting time for my glucose levels! Take care x
