VIDEO: The Lowest Hypo Of My Life

July 6, 2016
Hypo on a plane

Oooooopsie.

So you know, you’re on a flight at 6am and obviously, you’re asleep.

You woke up at an obscene hour but that’s all fine because it means HOLIDAY TIME.

Too early to eat anything, too early to remember what country you’re travelling to really. I barely manage to put my pants on the right way around on any given morning, let alone at 3.30am.

We made the plane, we fell asleep. I woke from said inflight snooze, dreaming of sunshine and cats I presume, and did an arbitrary blood test. Just like the 14 billion others I’ve done in my life.

Except this one gave me letters, not words. LOW.

I wanted to capture it to see if there was any tangible difference to a less severe hypo. Answer: YES. Look at the state of me. Watching this back, I really am quite the shade of yellow. It’s a sinister combination of Sunny Delight tinged with rotting liver.

Thankfully all was fixed and the remainder of the holiday was spent at normal blood glucose levels. ‘Normal’ being some slight highs, some minor hypos – thankfully nothing quite as dramatic. This meant I could film slightly more beautiful/interesting exploits – hiring boats, celebrating birthdays, eating and drinking far too much, and attending a rather stunning wedding, which was the reason for heading to Croatia in the first place. Hvar is a really, really special place – I would definitely add it to the travel list if you haven’t already been.

I hope you like this one xx

    Hi, Jen,

Your video of Hvar brought back a few memories – just exactly a year ago my wife and I visited Prague, Hungary, and Croatia while our kids were both away at sleepaway camp for the first time. Croatia was magnificent, though the night we stayed in Hvar it was essentially overrun by Australian university students who we found much more obnoxious than our American-based view of Australians as being generally quite genteel! At any rate, the island itself was stunning.

Glad you survived the hypo without too much trauma!

    Best,

    Bill

Do you now how low the meter reads in mmol? I once had a 0.9 while concious, which after I re-entered the world of the living was impressed by.

Hi Martin! Ouch that sounds like a nasty experience! I think 0.9 is actually the lowest, I’m very surprised I woke up to be honest but very thankful I did. Horrible as it was I was quite fascinated by it too!
